Chapters

How it begins

(Once upon a time, behind the white hills, an old woman named Naneh Sarma lived in a house with blue windows. Winter's quilt looked as though it had come straight out of her chest.)

(It was the last day of winter, and Naneh Sarma had been bustling since early morning. Not because of snow or wind, but because of the guest who arrived with spring every year: Amu Nowruz.)

(Well, this corner first, then that one! When Amu Nowruz arrives, the house must shine like a mirror. Little speck of dust, don't hide behind the chair leg; I spotted you too!)

(The broom went one way and the duster another. Naneh Sarma cleaned the windows, wiped the shelf, and shook out the little rug in the courtyard. A sparrow perched on the wall and tilted its head.)

(Are you waiting for spring too, tiny one? I'm waiting for an old man with a white beard. He travels far, but his arrival always brings goodness. Now move aside so the rug dust doesn't settle on your clean feathers!)

(When the spring cleaning was finished, the house smelled fresh. Naneh Sarma put her hands on her hips and turned around. Even the copper teapot on the shelf shone as though it were smiling for the guest.)

(Now it was time for the haft-sin spread. Naneh Sarma laid her termeh cloth beside the window. She smoothed its folds with her palm and carefully arranged the little dishes on it, one by one.)

(She placed the green sprouts in the middle, with red apples, garlic, oleaster fruit, sumac, vinegar, and samanu beside them. Then she set the mirror behind the sprouts and put the painted eggs in a bowl beside the spread.)

(And here is the fragrant hyacinth, beside the mirror! Dear Amu Nowruz, look at the spread I've prepared for you. Only you are missing, and the glass of hot tea I'll pour when you arrive.)

(Then she opened her chest. She took out her best flowered dress, put on her waistcoat, and adjusted her clean headscarf. Before the mirror, she looked at one side, then the other.)

(No, this pin is a little crooked. That's better! Naneh Sarma, you're looking as fresh as your house. Just remember not to get so excited when your guest arrives that you spill the sugar cubes into the saucer!)

(She set a plate of chickpea cookies beside the tea glasses and prepared a soft cushion near the fire for her guest. Then she sat down herself—not to sleep, only to rest her tired feet for a few minutes.)
